This table lists the first known base ball clubs in each state and nation, listed alphabetically. The game was widely played in the newly-defeated South, as well as the East and Midwest states.By the advent of the Civil War in 1861, the game had spread to almost all of America's largest towns, and in over half of US towns of 10,000 or more. Diante Lee 193 Aaron Rodgers, Lamar Jackson and the best offseason move for all 32 NFL teams The Athletic NFL Staff 88 Chiefs will enter camp with just 13 new players on projected 53-man.Until 1857 the new game was largely unplayed beyond the immediate New York City region. The overall picture is still emerging, but we already know some things we hadn't even guessed at a decade ago. But digitized sources, and inventive and cheap electronic searches, changed that. The 2012 season was the Kansas City Chiefs ' 43rd in the National Football League (NFL), their 53rd overall and their first and only full season under head coach Romeo Crennel, who had served as the interim head coach for the final three games of the 2011 season following Todd Haley 's termination. This table shows the earliest local clubs.įor both categories of data, much of what we know has been found fairly recently ten years ago, the spread of America's game received only passing attention. Average attendance is based upon the number of actual home dates where known (most leagues from 1992 and later). Our collection of data on local origins consists of two types earliest known local games and earliest known local clubs. The Syracuse Chiefs, a minor league baseball team, played in the Eastern League and International League between 19. It was a close between Pederson, who has a Super Bowl win with the Eagles under his belt, and Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy (who also has a Super Bowl win, with the Packers) and Packers coach Matt LaFleur. “For example, cruise ships recycle about 60% more waste per person than the average person recycles on shore. “There are significant improvements compared to the situation 15 years ago,” says Konstantin Tchetchine, general manager, business development, marine solutions/water and waste at Wärtsilä, a Finnish company that provides waste management technology for the shipping industry. In their annual environmental reports, cruise operators like to emphasize how much investment has gone into waste management and waste recycling and repurposing. Skip the pasta! And other unsavory truths about airplane food The ship’s food requests will be based on past experience of consumption, and the list of items necessary to prepare on board menus and services.įor example, when operating in the Mediterranean, and before every cruise, MSC Bellissima loads most of its provisions at its home port of Genoa, Italy, and receives an average of 15 full trucks of food and beverages per cruise (two of them carrying fresh fruit and vegetables). “The ship sends a request to our office according to the loading schedule, usually one or two weeks prior to the loading day for local provision, but in some cases further in advance,” explains Emanuele Lavarello, food and beverages procurement director at MSC Cruises, a firm that operates ships such as MSC Meraviglia and MSC Bellissima, both with capacity for more than 4,500 passengers. It’s a similar story for other giants of the seas. The list goes on and on – including, of course, the 450 cases of Champagne that are brought on at the start of each trip. Feeding around 6,600 passengers and 2,200 crew on a typical seven-day itinerary requires some 60,000 eggs, 9,700 pounds (4,400 kilograms) of chicken, 20,000 pounds of potatoes and 700 pounds of ice-cream. Take, for example, the Symphony of the Seas, currently the world’s largest cruise ship. Now imagine what the numbers look like for considerably larger ships. And the crew, of course, needs to look smart, with some 900 uniforms that must be pressed daily. Logistics is one of those functions on board a ship that few ever get to see in action, but is essential to guarantee the best experience for the passengers.Īnd with cruise ships getting larger every year, the logistics involved are staggering.Įven a relatively small cruise ship, such as the high-end Viking Orion, with a maximum capacity of 930 passengers, gets through some 5,000 eggs and 4,000 cups of tea per day, to name just one example.Īnd, then there’s the washing: 10,000 dishes every day, 14,000 bedsheets and pillowcases per week. It’s during this time window that the task of provisioning has to be conducted like clockwork. They do this either by distilling it from sea water (a process that uses the ship’s own heat and steam) or desalinating it through a reverse osmosis process, where water is filtered through a special membrane.īut the dozens of bars, restaurants and shops on board must still be stocked with all sorts of wares to serve a diverse and discerning clientele that is eager to consume pretty much around the clock.ĭuring the season, cruise ships tend to follow set itineraries, stopping at every port for some 10 hours on average. One essential is sorted, at least, as modern cruise ships are capable of producing a large proportion of their own fresh water. Napoleon is said to have claimed that an army marches on its stomach.Īnd while comparing a modern cruise ship to a unit of the Grande Armée might be a bit of a stretch, both face the same basic problem: how to keep several thousand people constantly supplied as they move from one place to the next.įortunately for those that live near their ports of call, and unlike the soldiers of 200 years ago, passengers on cruise ships aren’t expected to live off the lands they visit.īut this doesn’t make things easier for the ships’ quartermasters. Overall, there’s almost no evolution to be seen in terms of presentation, and that’s a shame. At least the soundtrack is instrumentally fantastic (the Fire Emblem games are known for featuring some of the best MIDI around), but the pieces aren’t as inspiring and memorable as the good old Game Boy games. Thankfully, there are a handful of full-motion videos, complete with great voice acting, speckled throughout the campaign to spice up the experience… but it’s quite a downer coming off of one of those dramatic, well-done FMV sequences and diving straight into the still-frame read-it-yourself dialogue cut scenes.īattle animations are particularly dull, as well, and chances are you will have located the option to switch them off by the time you begin your second battle. Boring, right? Yeah, it honestly could have been done better-and I’m not usually one to complain about a lack of voice acting, either. Excellently drawn cardboard cut-outs, but entirely static nonetheless. Radiant Dawn even returns to the same old dialogue scenes in between each battle, which feature cardboard cut-outs of each character accompanied with scrolling text. That isn’t always a bad thing, but admittedly the general lack of voice acting and full-motion cut scenes does detract significantly from the experience. Radiant Dawn might be a brand-new game, but if it weren’t for the funky new controller and widescreen presentation, you’d almost think you were playing the GameCube title. It’s tough even on the easiest difficulty setting! This game is not just a challenge-it’s a torturous romp through turn-based hell. You hardcore strategists might be thinking “What’s wrong with that? Games these days are way too easy, so I appreciate a challenge every once in a while.” But then you would be misunderstanding. With a relentlessly punishing difficulty level and unfathomably steep learning curve even on the easiest setting, Radiant Dawn provides a level of punishment that even Castlevania III and Super Monkey Ball would fear. That’s because Radiant Dawn is one of the most maniacally challenging strategy games ever created. Sure, you should have very little trouble picking up on the plot even if you missed the GameCube Path of Radiance, but this game is no place to start on the series. Wait… what did I just say? Wow, actually, that’s completely untrue. You will meet up with familiar faces along the way (if you played the GameCube game), but it’s okay if this is your first console Fire Emblem, too. It’s an interesting (if not thoroughly confusing) approach to be certain the game is essentially divided into four parts, all of which feature different lead characters and new armies. That’s because instead of providing a continuation of Path of Radiance’s storyline, Radiant Dawn simply tells the story from another perspective-that of a good-hearted, rebel faction within the enemy ranks. The world of Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn is referred to as "World of Radiance".If you missed the Fire Emblem game for the GameCube ( Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance), you’ll be happy to hear that while this new console-based entry in the series, similarly titled Radiant Dawn, is indeed a direct sequel to its predecessor, it actually does not rely on your having played the previous game. Some of its characters first appeared in its predecessor and prequel, Path of Radiance. It is currently listed tenth in the Catalog of Heroes and when sorting heroes by Origin, between Path of Radiance and Awakening. This leads to a war that will shake the destiny of the very world.įire Emblem: Radiant Dawn is the tenth game in the Fire Emblem series. She throws herself into the hopeless fray for the sake of the people. One of its members is Micaiah, the Silver-Haired Maiden, who possesses mysterious powers. They have but one hope: the Dawn Brigade. Three years have passed since Ike's heroic struggle, and the chains of imperial rule bind the citizens of one nation, defeated in the war, in oppression and poverty. Or do the whole main walk - 17.8km (11 miles) and a good strenuous work out. This short cut certainly removes a big descent and ascent. Normally the caveat against this short cut is that it goes through dull woods rather than dramatic escarpment scenery, but the woods might be rather picturesque at this time of year. Alternatively, if you continue on the main route but take the short cut to Emmetts Garden when prompted, you will do a total walk of 15km (9.3 miles). A short ending to Westerham (with a new improved start never done by the SWC, incidentally) takes you to Westerham in just 4.8km (3 miles), making a total walk from Edenbridge of 11.6km (7.2 miles). Lunch is usually (but see ** below for other options) taken after 4.2 miles in the self-service restaurant at Chartwell, country home of Winston Churchill (he was a famous predecessor of Boris Johnson, apparently.). It IS November, though: don’t come in your party shoes. There are also fine escarpment views and a section across open fields at the start: the latter may be muddy, but once on the Greensand Ridge things should be better. There may not be much autumn colour left now, but this route passes through lots of woods where it might still be lurking. This walk is often done in bluebell time, but has not had a weekend outing at this time of year since 2012. Rail companies, I know you are not reading this, but having taken two to three months to cut services to correspond to January passenger numbers, I hope you are not going to now take the same time to ramp them back up again. The first swallows were seen, swooping low over the cow poo, and at last a handful of butterflies were also on the wing - brimstones, orange tips and peacocks. The real star flowers, however, were lesser celandines and dandelions, both present in great quantities. The bluebells were only at the "blue haze" stage, but in places were getting a bit beyond that. I think some got alcoholic drinks on the green in Westerham. Five of us had tea at the community shop in Ide Hill, sitting on a grass bank to consume it. We split into small groups, so my account of the walk will inevitably be partial, but I know quite a few picnicked on the ridge, with fabulous views to the south. Nearly everyone had used the LWUG site to pre-register - so thanks for that - and those that had not provided email addresses on paper slips, so that all worked very efficiently. We're also adding support for new languages: GraphQL queries, embedding CSS-in-JS and JSON are now available in prettier! Blog Post: Adding a new layout strategy to Prettier by is not only a useful tool but it's also a really cool piece of technology. We've introduced TypeScript and CSS in the last release and are doing a batch of fixes for them in this release. Now that JavaScript needs for support is trending down, it's an opportunity to support other languages that front-end developers are working on and want formatted. We're not 100% there yet, but we're closer than ever! The goal is to find a good place where when people report code that is printed in a funny way, we can't make it better without making other pieces of code look worse, introduce behavior that's very hard to understand for humans and doesn't introduce some disproportionate complexity to the codebase. No automated tool is going to print perfect code for all the possible edge cases. This is the release I've been waiting for a very long time: one that has only minimal changes to JavaScript!įor the past 6 months, we kept doing changes to various aspects of printing JavaScript, with the hope that one day we would get to a stable place.
